Percy Tau will be central to Bafana Bafana’s chances at the Afcon tournament in Egypt, and the player is sure that his successful stint in Belgium will bode well for his own confidence.
The 25-year-old is part of a 27-man preliminary squad assembled by coach Stuart Baxter for a training camp, and will command a great deal of attention when Bafana begin their campaign against Ivory Coast in a few weeks time.
Having made a move from Mamelodi Sundowns to Brighton and Hove Albion at the start of the season, Tau was immediately shipped off to Belgian second tier outfit Royal Union Saint Gilloise, where he impressed on loan.
Despite the perceived dip in standard in the league, compared to the PSL, he maintained a positive attitude, contributing 13 goals and as many assists in his debut season to earn the Proximus League Player of the Season Award.
The club form spilled over to national duty, as he was instrumental in Bafana returning to the continental showpiece after being absent in the previous edition.
Success for Tau was not limited to achievements on the pitch, as he also obtained a B.Com degree.
Speaking to reporters, he reflected on what has been a productive season, both on and off the field, for him.
“It happens that I was able to finish my schooling, so I’m proud of that.
“And also, to continue with the hard work in Belgium and be named Player of the Season, which brings great confidence in what I’ve done and what the team also did.
“So, it was just a lot of positives to take out of my journey since I’ve left.”
The Afcon tournament begins on Friday, 24 June, with Bafana in action three days later.
