After what was a horrid season, Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp says it is important to identify the cause of the decline that has affected in the last few years.

Amakhosi experienced their worst season in the PSL era, finishing ninth place with their lowest points tally ever before crashing to first division outfit TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup final.

In the aftermath of the wretched campaign, much of the criticism has been flung towards the German’s direction, after he was brought in midway through the season.

However, he believes that there has been an apparent decline in Naturena, which has been evident long before he assumed duty for his second stint at the club.

“There is a reason things did not happen over the last few years. You have to find a reason why there’s been a decline over the past few years, especially after finishing a season like this,” Middendorp is quoted by The Citizen.

Chiefs won just nine of their 30 league games in the recently-concluded season, finishing with 39 points after going winless in their last seven fixtures.

Their ninth-place finish was their worst since the 2006/07 season, where Middendorp was also in charge of the club before being sacked some months before the end of the campaign.

The defeat to TS Galaxy also saw the Soweto giants’ trophyless run go beyond four years, and set to stretch even longer as they have not qualified for the MTN8.
