The Lions are set to host the Hurricanes at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Lions banked a crucial 41-22 bonus-point win against the Stormers in Johannesburg last Saturday. The result saw the Lions leapfrogging the Bulls and Sharks into second place on the South African conference log.

The five log points ultimately strengthened their bid for a playoff place, with only two regular-season games remaining.

The Hurricanes are currently sitting comfortably behind the Crusaders (1st place) on the New Zealand conference log with 44 points. The team is setting their sights on a spot in the playoffs after beating the Sharks 30-17 at Durban’s Kings Park last week.

Lions team and injury news

Changes to the Lions’ squad this week include the loss of Stephan Lewies who had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained at training on Thursday.

Reinhard Nothnagel comes into the starting line up at No 4 while Hacjivah Dayiman comes on to the bench at No 19.

Hurricanes team and injury news

The Hurricanes star inside back pairing of TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett will reach a special mark when they run on to face the Lions.

The match will be the 100th time the pair have combined at halfback and first five-eighth for the Hurricanes since their first match together in 2012.

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree has made five changes to the starting XV from the one which defeated the Sharks.

With Matt Proctor (pectoral muscle) and Wes Goosen (hamstring) having returned to New Zealand to have their injuries assessed, Jordie Barrett moves into centre while Chase Tiatia will start on the wing.

Tiatia’s inclusion sees Ben Lam move to the right wing while the experienced James Marshall moves from the reserves to start at fullback.

Gareth Evans, who made a pleasing return from a long-term calf injury off the bench against the Sharks, starts at No 8 while Ardie Savea moves to the reserves with Du’Plessis Kirifi named at openside flanker.

The other change in the pack is at hooker where Ricky Riccitelli is named to start with club captain Dane Coles again to feature off the bench.
