The Nedbank Cup pits top flight clubs against teams from the lower leagues and, every now and then, serves up a mismatch in the final.

Memorable thumpings in the competition include Mamelodi Sundowns’ 24-0 rout of Powerlines FC from Kimberley in 2012 – but that was in the first round.

As the 2019 edition of the tournament reaches its last two, men have been separated from the boys, but it’s another case of two teams from different leagues squaring off against each other.

Thirteen-time champions Kaizer Chiefs will be doing battle against first-division outfit TS Galaxy, who could either punch above their weight or be completely overwhelmed by the country’s most decorated club.

Biggest wins in the Nedbank Cup final

In the Nedbank Cup era, two finals stand out for turning out to be complete mismatches, even though both were between top flight clubs.

AmaZulu have suffered some beatings in finals over the years, and their most recent came in 2010, when they turned up against Bidvest Wits in what was a clash between two of the PSL’s oldest clubs.

Usuthu came second best on that occasion, after a brace from Sifiso Vilakazi plus a goal from Brazilian Fabricio Rodrigues gave the Students a resounding 3-0 victory for their first Nedbank Cup triumph.

The other match featured two past winners in then four-time champions Supersport United and Orlando Pirates, who have lifted the trophy eight times.

It was not to be for the Buccaneers, who were coming off their worst season in recent memory – finishing 11th in the league – having suffered a 6-1 thumping to their opponents earlier in the campaign.

There was to be no sweet revenge, as the Soweto giants were again convincingly beaten.
