There were to be no goals in Dubai on Saturday afternoon as South Africa and Ghana play to a goalless draw in a friendly held in preparation for the 2019 Afcon tournament.

Bafana coach Stuart Baxter fielded two separate sides for each 45 minutes of the encounter, with regular skipper Thulani Hlatshwayo leading out the first XI, which included the likes of Percy Tau, Dean Furman and Thulani Serero.

It was the Brighton and Hove Albion man who had the most chances in the scorching desert heat in the first half, but none of them came to anything as it remained goalless heading into the break.

The second half saw only goalkeeper Darren Keet emerge from the tunnel, as Baxter made wholesale changes, with Sundowns duo Hlompho Kekana and Themba Zwane making their way to the pitch, with the likes of Lars Veldwijk and Bongani Zungu also getting a run.

However, nothing came of the changes, as Veldwijk and Lebohang Maboe all had clear shots at goal without a change to the scoreline, as it ended goalless at the Dubai Police Academy.

Ghana were drawn in an all West African Group F, alongside Cameroon Guinea-Bissau, and Benin – who they begin their campaign against on Tuesday, 25 June.

This is a day after South Africa kick off against the Ivory Coast, who they’re pooled against in a tough Group D, where they will also face off against former champs Morocco and neighbours Namibia.

Bafana have one more friendly before the continental showpiece, against Angola on Wednesday, 19 June.
