Trippin’ With Skhumba: What you need to know about Salesman

The township outside of Pretoria is where Salesman’s story began, and in this week’s episode, the comedian tells all about how he got started on the stage and why we should all be happy that he’s still around to keep us entertained.

Skhumba picks Salesman up on the highway. It turns out it’s the same highway that Salesman had the last of his eight car accidents. Salesman tells Skhumba:

“I almost died on this road. It was bad… All I could do was protect my face. As long as my tongue is safe because I need that for work.”

A fitting name

The comedian was hit when an oncoming car swerved into his lane while heading to Monsterlus for a wedding.

With eight accidents behind him, I don’t know how he hasn’t landed a gig doing insurance ads. I can’t imagine there’s a more knowledgeable creative around when it comes to dealing with accident claims.

And he has the perfect name to be the next big-name insurance Salesman. Believe it or not, Salesman is not his real name. The comedian’s birth name is Ditshego, which means laughter. His mother explains:

“His father named him Ditshego. He said the way he makes jokes he’ll make the whole world laugh.”

Humble beginnings

The father-of-three is himself the youngest of four children and got his start playing taverns. He adds:

“When I started in the industry, vernacular comedy wasn’t common. Everybody would run to make English jokes so that they can also attract the corporate side.”

At the time, vernacular comedy was just starting to become accepted in South Africa, and he remembers learning his trade in the packed taverns:

“You get to check the weight of your material because these people won’t lie to you… But if they love you, they will love you for real.”

The latest episode of Trippin’ with Skhumba is available on Showmax this Thursday before we head off to visit with Tumi Morake in Bloemfontein to find out more about the 2016 Comic of the Year winner’s hometown.
