The South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) will be launched on Saturday at the Meropa Casino in Polokwane, Limpopo.
The awards ceremony will for the last year be held in the North West province.
SATMA Ceo Zandile Ndzimande says their aim is to give traditional music the recognition it deserves and to promote diversity.
“Today we are in Limpopo and we are launching the SATMAs and the reason we are launching it in Limpopo, it is a mandate that we have as the SATMAs that we basically take the SATMAs across all provinces. One only do we just take it across all provinces for the fun of it, but it is also because we are so diverse in our diverse languages and music and dance, including food. It is very important for us that as we are so diverse that we know each other’s culture, that we embrace each other’s culture.”
Department of Arts and Culture MEC Thandi Morake says this will further enhance the existing programs that the province has for traditional artists.
“Given our cultural diversity in the province of Limpopo, we are more than willing to partner with them and work together with them to basically promote and grow our traditional music. In the past we have as a province had artists like Thabo Seremi Maila and his group coming all the way from Sekhukhune, coming out as the best traditional group from SATMAs that were held in previous years.”
