John Lennon’s 80th birthday celebrated all over the world with special events

In celebration of what would have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday, there will be a series of events across the globe and in Liverpool to honour his memory.

A special birthday

According to ITV, the musician, who was shot dead aged 40 in New York in 1980, has continued to have an enduring influence on popular culture long after his murder.

Following a chance encounter with his future bandmate Paul McCartney at a church fete in 1957, he went on to change the course of musical history with a body of work which has stood the test of time. After helping to propel The Beatles to international stardom and securing their place as one of the world’s biggest ever bands, Lennon continued to enjoy a varied career.

Special events

The Cavern Club Liverpool took to social media to invite the public to join in celebrating the life of John Lennon saying:

“John Lennon would have turned 80 today. He was born in Liverpool on 9th October 1940 – he will never be forgotten. Today we will be posting throughout the day about John, his life and his music.”

 A collection of previously unseen pictures of Lennon in New York will also go on display at The Beatles Story in Liverpool, reports Algoa FM.

Lennon’s landmark birthday is also being marked with a pop-up television channel called LENNON80 which will feature special programming while Universal Music Group is launching the channel on Sky, Virgin and Freeview from today until 15 October.

Even the Empire State Building shone its tower lights in Sky Blue with a white peace sign rotating in the mast on Thursday 8 October in partnership with the John Lennon Estate and Universal Music Group to celebrate John Lennon’s life and legacy ahead of the big day.

The celebration also coincides with the release of a new album titled Gimme Some Truth, The Ultimate Mixes featuring 36 of Lennon’s best-loved songs from his solo career.
