Instagram hacks: How to create an eye-catching account

Be that Instagram account everyone wants to follow with these easy hacks for a great-looking feed.

Many are eager to build and develop their presence on the app as it is still one of the biggest and fastest-growing social media platforms.

Behind every account is a personality with a voice. It’s also a place to connect and engage with individuals without having to write a lengthy blog post.

One important thing to keep in mind is that you do not need to be a well-known celebrity or photographer to attract more followers.

Here are a few hacks to create a consistent and visually pleasing Instagram account.

Your Instagram handle and profile picture

Your Instagram handle, or username, and profile picture should give clues to tell people what you and your account are all about.

For example, if you would like to run a travel diary on Instagram, your profile picture should show you travelling. Your username should be related to travelling, for example @YoungAdventures.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something simple, try using your first name and surname. You can’t have a space in the username, so use an underscore between.

Remember, your username and name are two separate things on Instagram: The username is what people can find by inserting the “at sign”:  @.

Create an interesting bio

Your Instagram bio is usually the first thing people read after clicking on your handle, therefore it is important to keep things fresh.

You only have 150 characters for your Instagram bio, so be careful and do not compromise on your message.

Follow these five tips:

  • Appear in more search results

The “Name” field in your Instagram bio is searchable, so include keywords in your “Name” field to highlight what your Instagram profile or business is about.

This enhances your chances of appearing in Instagram’s Explore page if anyone searches for those keywords.

  • Add line breaks

This simple trick makes your account look professional and organised.

  • Find the right alignment

Getting the right spacing for your bio could make all the difference. This one might take some trial and error to get right, but the results will really stand out.

  • Add your website link

If you have other social media accounts or an online platform you would like to drive traffic to, copy and paste the link in your bio under “Website”.

  • Link other profiles

To do this, include @ before the account name; users will be able to click it to learn more. This could be useful if you are managing more than one account or are an ambassador for a company.

Have an attractive feed

It is important to try and make your feed and posts look appealing. Keep it simple but original.

Also put time aside to plan your Instagram feed in advance and post when your followers are most active to receive ample likes and comments.

Tips and tricks to personalise your posts and feed:

  • Add the same border in each and every post.
  • Stay away from posting collages, as they can appear noisy. If you want to post more than one picture at a time, then you can post up to 10 images.
  • Decide on an overall theme, colour scheme or aesthetic, preferably something close to you which you know quite well.
  • When editing your photos, keep the edits simple and avoid using over-dramatic filters.
  • Create grid arts across your feed by using a visual planner app.
  • Tag those who contributed to the post, whether it was a dress you are wearing from a local thrift shop or a friend who took the photo. If you tag them on the photograph, it will show up in their notifications.
  • Create a cover photo for your video content, because the Insta format is square but video format rarely is.
  • Write a caption that is relevant to the post and do not forget to add line breaks and hashtags.

Develop those highlights

Think of your Instagram Stories Highlights as your portfolio — you want to share your best content up front and centre on your profile page.

In addition, your Instagram Stories icons can help to draw in your audience and entice them to tap through to see more of your story posts.

Make sure that your highlights match your overall Instagram aesthetic, colour scheme or theme. Also let your audience know what your highlight is about by adding a short title.
