It’s been a glorious week for bragging rights in Cape Town. Not only has it been recently-revealed that the city now pays higher salaries than its friendly rival Johannesburg, but the quality of life in the Mother City is also turning heads: The latest data set from Deutsche Bank will be music to Capetonian ears.

The miles of golden coastlines and exquisite, mountainous backdrops seem to have impressed quite a few respondents – but perhaps, not enough. On the 56-city survey, Cape Town is actually in mid-table. It struggles to hold a candle to destinations in Europe, America and Australia.

The Swiss city of Zurich tops the charts, with its picturesque Alpine location and financial clout counting for the most. Wellington (New Zealand) is a close second, whereas Copenhagen in Denmark takes the bronze. Edinburgh in Scotland and Vienna (Austria) complete the top five.

Cities with the best quality of life

The survey determines a “quality of life” by assessing the following things – Purchasing power, safety, quality of health care, cost of living, property price to income ratio, traffic commute time, pollution and climate:

  1. Zurich, Switzerland
  2. Wellington, New Zealand
  3. Copenhagen, Denmark
  4. Edinburgh, Scotland / UK
  5. Vienna, Austria
  6. Helsinki, Finland
  7. Melbourne, Australia
  8. Boston, USA
  9. San Francisco, USA
  10. Sydney, Australia

Cape Town, Johannesburg outshine European giants

Given that some of the indicators revolve around safety and traffic volumes, it was always going to be an uphill task for our two biggest cities. However, Cape Town is the best of the pair, coming in at number 28.

It’s crime and safety rating is one of the lowest in the data, but CPT scores highly for its pleasant climate and – believe it or not – income to property price ratio. Make of that what you will.

Cape Town and Johannesburg are separated by four places in the table, but the Gauteng metropolis can consider coming 32nd as a reasonable performance. Paris (36th), London (40th) and Rome (41st) all finish significantly lower based on their “quality of life” assessments.

They are also world leaders on the income to property price ratio, too. Only Riyadh in Saudi Arabia is judged to be any fairer. However, Joburg has racked-up the highest crime rating of all participating cities. It’s sad, but if it wasn’t for high levels of criminality in Mzansi, our cities would fare much better here.
