After 12 days of movie magic in the French Rivera, the annual Cannes Film Festival came to an end. This year, several South African creatives attended the prestigious festival.

The South African entries, predominantly featured in the documentary segment, were The Rise, African Warrior Queen, Influence and The Colonel’s Stray Dogs.

Mati Diop

In addition, Mati Diop from the prominent Senegalese Diop family, became the first black woman to have her film Atlantics premiere at Cannes to compete for the coveted Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the festival.

Atlantics follows a group of people who leave Senegal for a better life in Spain. It also shows a side of the refugee crisis we don’t often get to witness, and the transformation of young Ada as she waits for her love to return.

“If you are ready to face the ocean, it says a lot about the despair in the situation, the reality of the present that you are stuck in.”

Quentin Tarantino

Other Cannes highlights included Palme d’Or past-winner Quentin Tarantino who returned with one of his best-reviewed films in years. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a dark fairytale set in Hollywood’s Golden Era.

It also stars award-winning actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pit and Margot Robbie, who received a momentous six-minute standing ovation.

Elton John

Elton John also joined in the festivities despite an apparent hip injury. He blew the crowd away with Rocketman, which he executive-produced. Rocketman also stars Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
