South Africa has recorded 7 458 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number of cases to date to 1 011 871.

The country has also recorded 336 new COVID-19 related fatalities on Monday.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says most of the new deaths were recorded in the Western Cape.

“Regrettably, we report 336 more COVID-19 related deaths: 109 from Eastern Cape, 8 from the Free State, 22 from Gauteng, 49 from KwaZulu-Natal and 148 from the Western Cape,” says Dr Mkhize.

This brings the total number of deaths to 27 071.

The cumulative number of tests conducted to date is 6 469 025.

Earlier, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country will return to an adjusted version of level three of the coronavirus lockdown – amid a surge in the virus.

The level three restrictions will remain in force until the 15th of January next year – when they will be reviewed.

They include a prohibition of indoor and outdoor meetings and the curfew being extended from 9 pm to 6 am.
