African National Congress (ANC) President and new President elect of the country, Cyril Ramaphosa, has told a crowd at the ruling party’s headquarters at Luthuli House in Johannesburg that only the ANC can take the country forward.

Hundreds of people gathered at Luthuli House to celebrate the ANC’s election victories. The ANC has again won the majority of votes for the National Assembly as well as in eight of the nine provinces.

Ramaphosa has also pledged to return to troubled communities such as Alexandra – to ensure their demands are being addressed.

Alexandra residents have complained about service delivery in their area – among other things. Ramaphosa says he’ll go back to Alexandra and other areas for a sit-down.

“We are going to go back to all those communities which were raising issues, sizo buyela e Alexandra (we will go back to Alexandra) nami ngizobuyela ngo kwami (I will also return) sizo khuluma na bantu bakhithi (we will talk to our people) and then sit down and have a conversation about what the African National Congress is going to do.”

Ramaphosa says youth and women will be given first priority in his government, where jobs will be created and grow the economy.

“We are going to make sure that we give the young people of our country great opportunity so that we can grow the economy and see them get ahead in life. We’ll also make sure women get the opportunity.”

Ramaphosa wished all mothers a happy Mother’s Day. He also thanked people for their faith in the ANC.
