The Democratic Alliance (DA) has wrestled power from the United Front of Civics at the troubled Matjhabeng Municipality’s Ward 3 in Hennenman in the Free State.

Six political parties, including the African National Congress (ANC), DA and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), contested the vacant Ward.

The ANC on the other hand, has retained Ward 6 in Mohokare and two Wards in the Mangaung Metro.

Municipal by-elections in the Free State provided political parties with a clear picture of what to expect in next year’s local government election.

In the Free State, the much-anticipated elections were held in three municipalities, namely Mohokare, Matjhabeng and Mangaung.

In KZN by-elections:

By-election results from one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most closely contested Wards at Mtubatuba on the north coast are pending.

The IFP is said to be leading by 5 votes.

However, there are seven votes that still need to be verified by election officials.

The Ward is a decider as to which party could run the Mtubatuba municipality currently controlled by the ANC.

Both the ANC and IFP have 18 seats each in the council.
