The Nelson Mandela Foundation says president-elect Joe Biden and Vice-president-elect, Kamala Harris, fought a difficult but ultimately successful campaign.

The foundation says they face a tough task of undoing the deepening of prejudice and hatred during the Trump years.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he looks forward to working with US president-elect Joe Biden in tackling tough global problems.

Ramaphosa says that the challenges include the coronavirus pandemic, climate change, human rights and global security.

South Africa congratulates US president-elect Joe Biden: 

Democrat Biden, has already started setting up his team to take over from Republican incumbent, Donald Trump, in mid-January. However, Trump has yet to concede defeat.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) says it hopes there will no constitutional crisis in the US.

Celebrations continued into the night after Biden and his deputy, Harris, won the poll.

Biden has since vowed to unite the country.

Speaking to the SABC during a campaign trail in Kagiso west of Johannesburg, ANC secretary-general, Ace Magashule, said they were hopeful that sanity would prevail in the US.
