Who is the suspect charged with her murder?

The tricky prescripts of the law have prevented us from furnishing the name of the suspect believed to be the murderer of Uyinene Mrwetyana.

However, this does not mean that we can not explore key information about him. Therefore, this is what we know, so far, about the alleged killer:

  • He is a black male
  • He is 42 years old
  • He is/was employed at the Post Office in Claremont, Cape Town
  • He is believed to be a Khayelitsha resident

It is believed that the suspect has already confessed to murdering and raping Mrwetyana. This, however, can only be confirmed if and when he pleads guilty to the charges.

The chilling details around Mrwetyana’s last moments

The suspect’s name has already been revealed and trending on social media. However, as publishers, we have to abide by the law and follow due process before we can reveal his name and face on our platform.

A more interesting and chilling account we came across was from a Facebook user who claimed to have knowledge about the details furnished by the suspect in his confession.

According to Pearl Tyani, Mrwetyana was allegedly murdered by the 42-year-old at the Post Office on the day she was reported missing.

Tyani alleged, in her post, that her roommate’s father, an employee of the Claremont police station, claimed that the 42-year-old Khayelitsha resident handed himself over to authorities, on the sixth day of Mrwetyana’s disappearance.

“The man [allegedly] told the police that Uyinene went to the Post Office to fetch a package and [was short of money]. So, he [allegedly] told her to come back at 14:00 [whereas] the Post Office closes at 13:00 [on Saturdays],” Tyani wrote.

According to the user, Mrwetyana, unaware of the fact that she was walking into the suspect’s lair, allegedly returned at the said time and that is when she was allegedly attacked by the suspect.

“When [Uyinene] came, he was [allegedly] the only one left [at the Post Office] and that’s when he [allegedly] hit her head against the wall/floor after [allegedly] trying to force himself onto her,” Tyani added.

Uyinene Mrwetyana: What’s likely to happen next in the murder case?

The suspect is expected to have pleaded guilty to the murder and rape of Uyinene Mrwetyana, by the time he has concluded his business with the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, on Monday.

However, there is every possibility that he may do a 180-flip and retract his confession. Should this be the case, the court, after accepting his ‘not guilty’ plea, will have to deliberate on the validity of the confession and assess whether it was lawfully obtained.

For now, all we can do is wait for authorities to divulge updates on the case.
