South Africa has recorded 1575 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total confirmed cases to 692 471. Gauteng still accounts for most of the country’s cases provincially with 223 011 (32.2%) cases, while the Northern Cape has recorded the least cases provincially with 19 078 (2.8%) cases.

The country has also recorded 107 new COVID-19 related fatalities, bringing the total number of deaths to 17 780.

Most of the new deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape. The province recorded 58 of the 107 COVID-19 related deaths.

“Regrettably, we report 107 more COVID-19 related deaths: 58 from Eastern Cape, 38 from the Free State, four from KwaZulu-Natal, six from Gauteng and one from Western Cape. This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 17 780. Of the 107 deaths reported today, four occurred in the past 24-48 hours: one in Gauteng, two in KwaZulu-Natal and one in the Western Cape. We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers that treated the deceased patients,” Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize said in a statement.

Gauteng has recorded the most deaths provincially with 4 450 COVID-19 related deaths, while the Northern Cape has recorded the least deaths with 232 fatalities.

Tests and recoveries

A total number of 4 407 441 tests have been conducted to date in the country, with 19 270 new tests conducted in the last 24-hour cycle. The public sector accounts for 1 897 136 (43%) tests while the private sector accounts for 2 510 305 (57%) of total tests.

A total of 623 765 people have recovered from the virus, bringing the country’s recovery rate to 90%.
