The suspects were released into the custody of their parents while the investigation continues. According to Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele, the case has been remanded to April:

“The matter is still under investigation, if there are any suspects who were or are involved they will be arrested.”

Captain Makhubele told Times Live soon after the incident that Kulani’s murder may have been part of a botched robbery. Investigating officers could not find his phone at the scene of the crime.

The search for the phone took them to a nearby school, where the 13-year-old suspect was arrested.
