Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and his wife have tested positive for coronavirus. In a statement, the minister says they decided to test yesterday after experiencing mild symptoms.

“I was feeling abnormally exhausted and as the day progressed, I started losing appetite. My wife had a cough, was dizzy, and extremely exhausted. Given her symptoms, the doctors advised that she must be admitted for observation and rehydration.”

Mkhize says they have informed those that they have been in contact with recently. He is currently in quarantine at home.

“My wife and I remain optimistic that we will fully recover from this virus.”

He has urged South Africans to continue adhering to the safety protocols.

“I wish to take this opportunity to urge all South Africans to continue adhering to health protocols. I want to beg that we do not neglect wearing our masks, social distancing, and washing / sanitising our hands.”

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus cases across the world continues to increase rapidly.

South Africa had on 17 October 2020 recorded 1 928 new coronavirus cases. That brought the total number of cases to 702 131.

The COVID-19 related fatalities stand at 18 408.
