Here’s the new school calendar for 2020 – featuring holidays and term dates

The government is preparing to gazette the official new school calendar for 2020 on Friday, after the educational year was decimated by the coronavirus pandemic. With the return to the classroom already underway for our Grade 7 and Grade 12 pupils, the rest are set to follow – with the intention of completing a tumultuous academic year.

School calendar for 2020: When does each grade return?

Schools officially closed on 18 March, but reopened on Monday. There will now be a phased-in approach for the learners yet to return, which will take place in the following stages:

School calendar – revised term times and holidays for 2020

The second term – which officially began on Monday for Grade 7 and Grade 12 students – will run until 7 August, and gradually introduce every child back to the classroom. That is followed by one very short break, before our learners finish the year with the proverbial marathon. Term 4 will last for 52 school days over ten weeks:

Term Duration Number of Weeks Number of Days Total Public Holidays Total School Days
1 15 Jan – 18 Mar 10 46 0 46

3 12 Aug – 23 Sept 7 31 0 31

When are children meant to be in school?

School holidays are sporadic over the next six months. Kids get a four-day break – incorporated with a public holiday – in August. At the end of September and into early October, learners will have an 11-day break from the classroom, as they transition from Term 3 to Term 4. The last day of school will be Tuesday 15 December, before our educational facilities turn it in for the Christmas break:
