Gavin Watson celebrated as a fellow revolutionary by the ANC

The funeral of late Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson has been punctuated by the presence of African National Congress (ANC) stalwarts, party flags hung on the walls, and supporters singing praise songs.

The tragic incident involving Gavin Watson

Watson was killed the week before when the car he was traveling in collided with a concrete pillar of a bridge on the road approaching OR Tambo International Airport.

The influential businessman has been in the news recently because of the testimony of Bosasa’s former COO Angelo Agrizzi at the state capture inquiry.

Agrizzi said he decided to come clean and reveal that he was tasked with organising bribes in cash for former president Jacob Zuma, Cartier pens, a Louis Vuitton bag stuffed with banknotes for former South African Airways board chairwoman Dudu Myeni, and in the case of former water affairs minister Nomvula Mokonyane, huge orders of food and drinks for Christmas.

On top of that, a donation from Bosasa to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s CR17 campaign fund has been heavily scrutinised by Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

The ANC show strong support for Watson and his family

In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, the ruling ANC has come out in a big way to show its support for Watson and his family.

The day began with the party’s Nelson Mandela Bay Regional task team head Nceba Faku leading a small team to Watson’s home in Mill Park to raise an ANC flag at the residence.

“We all have our shortcomings, but we choose not to focus on that because there is a better person in all of us,” Faku said, according to The Herald.

“There are always positives to any person and we are here today to recognise that. Your family is one of the heroic families in Port Elizabeth. It’s one of the torch bearers of the fight against discrimination laws long before 1994.”

More party flags were draped over the walls and podium at the location of the funeral and members would regularly burst out in praise songs.

Jacob Zuma in the front row

Not that it really matters on a day like today, but the Watson family’s close ties with Jacob Zuma were clear for all to see as the former president was seated in the front row with the family for proceedings.
