Forbes latest: Nicky Oppenheimer ‘now worth more’ than Johann Rupert

Ah, the cat and mouse melodrama of South Africa’s two richest citizens: Both Nicky Oppenheimer and Johann Rupert are obscenely rich. It doesn’t matter which one has more money, because combined, they’re worth over $15 billion – or R225 billion, based on our current exchange rates.

Fluctuating values: The richest South Africans in 2021

However, human curiosity never fails to get the better of us – especially when the Forbes Billionaires List suggests that Nicky Oppenheimer has reclaimed his spot as the wealthiest person in the country, replacing Johann Rupert in the process. The new figures, released at the end of January, make for a compelling read.

As we reported earlier, both men are featured in ‘the top five richest Africans’ list for 2021. Oppenheimer takes third spot, and Rupert comes in fourth. South Africa has three other dollar billionaires, but they can’t really lay a glove on the top dogs.

So who is richer, Nicky Oppenheimer or Johann Rupert?

That sounds like a nutty question to ask after everything that’s just been said, but the truth is, it depends on who you ask. Bloomberg, for example, estimates Johann Rupert to be worth more than Nicky Oppenheimer. However, their data includes the combined wealth of ‘Rupert and family’ – hence the fluctuating values.

Johann Rupert is likely to regain the top spot in due course… and lose it again. These guys have an enormous set of investments that determine their ‘net worth’ – that means there are also enormous swings in value. The business world is so famously ruthless, and while Oppenheimer reigns supreme for now, that could all change in the near future.

Just as Rupert learned this year.
