SABC News King Thulare - Bapedi king Victor Thulare the third passes away

Bapedi king, Victor Thulare the third, has died after a short illness in Johannesburg.

The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Thulare was given a certificate recognising him as king by President Cyril Ramaphosa last year.

This followed a long battle regarding the kingship with his uncle K.K Sekhukhune.

 

History remembers the Bapedi people amongst others, for their gallant fight for their sovereignty and independence against founders of apartheid.

Upon assuming his seat, king Thulare’s focus was on the revival of the customs and traditions of the Pedi nation and the socio-economic development of the kingdom.

Death of King Kekana

Meanwhile, President Ramaphosa has sent condolences on the passing of the chief of the Mandebele in Limpopo, Kgoshi Sello Kekana the third.

Kgoshi Kekana ruled Mandebele at Moletlane in Zebediela, outside Polokwane.

In a statement from the office of the Presidency, Ramaphosa describes Kekana’s passing as not only a loss to the Mandebele tribe, but to the entire nation.

The President says traditional leaders are the custodian of the country’s heritage.
