Counterfeits are having a big toll on Nokia handset sales in Kenya in 2011. H+K Strategies helped Nokia develop “A State of Counterfeits in Kenya” report. The report was used to proactively engage traditional and - for the first time - social media players, such as bloggers and other relevant
stakeholders in government. The campaign resulted in increased awareness and inclusion of Nokia in anti-counterfeit task force. It also encouraged a name and shame culture among retailers who reported culprits to police. Nokia is now a recognized partner in ACA’s progress meetings. In terms of impact there was a significant decline in counterfeit handsets, which eventually came down to low single digits.

Furthermore, President Kibaki recently ordered CCK to switch off counterfeit and stolen phones. This campaign was declared the Best Public Affairs Campaign for 2011 at PRSK Excellence Awards
